soleil.

Soleil, which means sun in French is my latest sculpture. The Sun is the star at the center of the Solar System. It is a nearly perfect ball of hot plasma, heated to incandescence by nuclear fusion reactions in its core. The Sun radiates this energy mainly as light, ultraviolet, and infrared radiation, and is the most important source of energy for life on Earth. This piece is a testament to how the sun is integral to life. It provides the light all living beings need to grow and thrive, but it also provides a beacon of hope. The sun is dynamic and ever moving much like our lives on this earth. The color, texture, and fabric of Soleil are intentional. Incorporated into it are lengths of recycled calico from old dresses, satin from a costume, an old curtain, and felt left over from a puppet, wire wrapped in yarn and wool. Woven into Soleil are yarn, string, lace, wire, and wool. There is an irony to the use of materials. Fabric, yarn, and lace are often associated with warmth, comfort, and serenity, and the sun is fiery, hot, and turbulent.  I’m playing with color, line, and texture with the materials to create a sense of movement of this perfect star.
