This body of work which is titled Westport is a study of light, the light that bounces off the sky and dances on the ocean. The Westport River in the fall is dark, wild, and menacing, surrounded by beach grass, untamed, frenetic, and alive with movement. The brush strokes mimic the movement of the grass, the water, and the light in the sky. I’ve removed ink from areas to highlight the texture and pattern of this light. On this day the horizon line almost melted into the sky. The ocean, grasses, and atmosphere were bathed in Paynes gray, slate and steel blue, and charcoal, evoking a sense of somber moodiness. The color palette is intentional, these colors are meant to invoke a sense of quiet reflection allowing the viewers to pause and consider the fragility of nature.
