Memory Threads

Memory Threads are fabric testaments of feelings and memories. Each piece is exploring how color evokes an emotion, and each “thread” delves deeper into a memory. In my sculptures, there are articles of recycled clothing worn by my family, old t-shirts of my husband, a discarded skirt from my daughter, felt from an old Halloween costume I made for my son, curtains from one of my homes, yarn that my mom and mother-in-law used to make hats or mittens.

Chicken wire is used to create vessels for the threads to live in, mostly visible, but sometimes more ambiguous depending on the memory. The paradoxical relationship between the sharp hard chicken wire and the soft fabric and yarn is directly related to how memories are sometimes positive and negative at the same time.  Continued use of fabric, yarn, string, wire, and PCV piping is in this series. My use of color is intentional as I explore the ombre patterns associated with the memory. I am using these materials to create painted washes of color, line, and texture through this medium to describe a narrative. Together the sculptures are an illumination of my history.
